THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES TED . . . A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE GREEN
Congratulations Ted on your latest book “Winson Green to Brookfields” My word it brought back some memories I can tell you. For me it was almost a personal family photograph album.
Apart from say half a dozen photographs there isn’t another photo in there that doesn’t bring back some memory from the past.
For instance there on page 46 was that great old factory “Joseph Lucas” where as a youngster I lived right next door to at Number 1/21 Burberry Street. I remember it vividly as every night German areoplanes would drop their incendiary bombs in an effort to stop war time production. I together with my family and next door neighbours would be down in the damp musty cellar listening to them as they screamed down out of the sky. My parents would try and drown the noise out by playing some old Glenn Miller records on a wind up gramophone. Next morning on my way to school I would go shrapnel hunting to swap for lead soldiers from my schoolmates.
On page 51 it shows Icknield Street and the overhead railway bridge but what caught my eye was the builders “Blackwells” It was the first job I had on leaving school at fifteen. I remember on a freezing snow covered cold January morning arriving there to start work.( My mother had arranged all this for me a couple of nights before in the local pub “The Bulls Head” on the corner of Icknield Street, apparently she knew the builder Joe Blackwell.) I was put to work for eight hours pushing a wheelbarrow the size of a Sherman tank full of wet sand up some slippery entry of a back to back house. I stuck it for two days then packed it in and found work for myself elsewhere.

Also in your wonderful book I found my childhood school All Saints which was also the church where I was married, much later on of course, plus “The Hydraulic” public house where I held my wedding reception. I remember that quite well as I had a problem trying to find eight pounds to pay the small band I had hired. It was solved when my Uncle Stan slipped me a tenner as he hadn’t had the time to look for a present.
As I turned the pages the memories flooded back with every photo: Bishop Latimers church where my son Scott was christened: The Abbey Vaults where we celebrated my sisters divorce coming through: Spring Hill library where they had a few bob off me for the late return of their books and so on and so on. Then finally on page 25 it shows Lodge Road. In this picture it shows the actual house where my brother Len and his family lived for many years.
So like I said at the start of this story, your book is in a way my own family album and hopefully I will be able to show my own grandchildren and point out that this was where your Mom and Uncle Scott was born and lived for most of their childhood.
Thanks Ted for so many wonderful memories and I look forward to your next venture.
