St Chrysostoms
My mom had 3 cousins who were baptised at St. Chrysostoms in the 1930's. The family name was Rundle, and they lived at 42 Don Street, which my mom remembers as being quite poor even by the standards of those times. She herself (maiden name Pittaway) spent a lot of her childhood in Bacchus Road and Aberdeen Street.

St Chrysostoms church was a rough old church and if we had had our way we would have married at St Michaels but they refused. I cannot think of worse surroundings than that church had, the corrugated metal facade of the woodyard opposite, scrapyards and derelict land with old metal and wood fencing alongside and a railway bridge 50 yards away and completed to perfection with all the railings removed and weeds covering every spare space - a scene of sheer beauty in 1958. St Michael's (Mickey's)
Strictly speaking is in Handsworth although it can clearly be seen from Benson Road School - In the late fifties the Vicar was the Reverend Ronald Jennings who went on to become Bishop of Gambia. He proudly displayed his Bishop's spats and gatters when he returned to officiate at my brother's wedding in 1963 at St Michael's (Jennings was a personal friend of my brother's in-laws). In the 1950s the Rev Jennings erected tall iron railings around the church grounds to which my father said to him "You want to get the buggers in there not keep them out". Stuart Waldron
